There are already other extensions that do almost that exact thing! On chrome you can use hoverzoom or you could try out this greasyfork script that does the same thing.

can you make it so it pops up so it doesnt go to the direct image and you have to use the back button to get back? maybe make it pop into view with an 'X' to close the window. also, Esc keep would be useful as well to accompany the 'X'.
