Instagram – Enable Standard Video Controls

This userscript forces Instagram videos to use the browser’s native video controls.

What it does

  • Enables the controls attribute on all videos
  • Prevents Instagram from changing volume or muting videos
  • Saves your preferred volume and reapplies it to new videos
  • Blocks events that pause videos automatically
  • Hides some unnecessary UI elements from the player

How it works

  • Monkey patches HTMLMediaElement to block volume and muted changes
  • Intercepts video insertion via appendChild
  • Applies settings automatically to every new video
  • Uses GM_setValue / GM_getValue to persist volume

Notes

  • May break if Instagram changes how videos are rendered
